DUSU Holdings LLC

During the late 1990s, Brightpoint Middle East operated from Dubai as a regional mobile-handset distribution, logistics and outsourced-services company. It connected handset manufacturers—including Nokia and emerging wireless-device brands—with mobile-network operators, distributors, retailers and consumers across the Middle East, Africa and parts of Asia.

The operation handled handset procurement, importing, demand forecasting, inventory management, product configuration, customized packaging, warehousing, order fulfillment and regional distribution. Brightpoint’s Dubai organization also managed distribution facilities and relationships extending into Singapore and Hong Kong.

Brightpoint Middle East helped establish FONO, a joint venture with Dubai’s Al Maktoum family. FONO developed a Nokia-focused retail and distribution channel comprising more than 20 branded telecommunications stores across the Middle East and Gulf states. Axiom Telecom acquired FONO in 2005.

Brightpoint Jordan and Fastlink

Brightpoint Jordan Ltd. was established as a local outsourced distribution and operator-support business, principally serving Fastlink, Jordan’s original mobile-network operator and the predecessor of Zain Jordan.

Under an integrated services agreement, Brightpoint Jordan managed the physical supply chain supporting Fastlink’s handset, prepaid and early mobile-commerce businesses. Its responsibilities included:

  • Handset and accessory procurement.
  • Importation, warehousing and inventory management.
  • Product configuration, packaging and distribution.
  • Supplying Fastlink dealers and retail channels.
  • Supporting prepaid-product availability and market expansion.
  • Operating to agreed service levels.
  • Providing financial, inventory and operational reports to Fastlink and BrightPoint Middle East.

This capability became particularly important as Fastlink responded to the entry of a second Jordanian mobile operator. Brightpoint Jordan gave Fastlink a dedicated distribution and fulfillment infrastructure without requiring the operator to build every supply-chain function internally. Fastlink–BrightPoint Jordan agreement

In 2002, Brightpoint Inc. sold its interests in Brightpoint Middle East and Brightpoint Jordan to Persequor, a company controlled by the regional management team. The businesses continued operating within the regional organization following that transaction. 2002 management transaction

i-mate Distribution and After-Market Services

i-mate was founded in 2001 and established its operational headquarters in Dubai in 2003. The company developed, branded and marketed Windows Mobile smartphones and Pocket PCs. The physical handsets were manufactured principally by third-party manufacturers, most notably HTC during i-mate’s early years, rather than in Dubai.

Brightpoint Middle East, and subsequently Workz, provided much of the operational infrastructure required to move and support i-mate products internationally. These activities included:

  • Receiving finished handsets from manufacturers.
  • Warehousing and inventory management.
  • International distribution and order fulfillment.
  • Product packaging and regional configuration.
  • Returns and warranty administration.
  • Hands-on handset diagnosis, repair and refurbishment.
  • Spare-parts inventory and replacement management.
  • Establishing and managing authorized service-center arrangements.
  • Collecting defective devices and returning repaired or replacement units.
  • Reporting warranty, repair and inventory information to i-mate.

In effect, i-mate controlled the product, brand and customer proposition, while Brightpoint and Workz provided important elements of the physical distribution, third-party logistics, warranty and after-sales infrastructure.

i-mate’s Dubai operation encountered serious difficulties following the end of its manufacturing relationship with HTC and ultimately closed in 2009. i-mate corporate history Report on i-mate’s 2009 closure

The Formation and Development of Workz

The business that became Workz emerged from the management-controlled Brightpoint Middle East structure and was operating independently under the Workz name by approximately 2005.

As the businesses were separated:

  • FONO was sold to Axiom Telecom.
  • The Nokia handset-distribution interest was spun off.
  • Workz retained and developed its logistics, packaging, fulfillment, after-market-services and operator-consulting capabilities.
  • The company continued supporting i-mate through warranty management, handset repair coordination and third-party logistics.
  • ProWorkz was developed to provide operators with supply-chain, market-entry and operational consulting services.

Rather than remain principally a handset trader, Workz progressively repositioned itself as a secure telecommunications manufacturer and technology provider.

Dubai Manufacturing, Packaging and Fulfillment

Workz built an integrated manufacturing and logistics operation in Dubai Production City. The facility brought secure manufacturing, personalization, packaging, fulfillment and international logistics together under one roof.

Its SIM-card operations included manufacturing and finishing physical SIM cards, loading operator software and subscriber profiles, securely personalizing each card with unique network credentials, printing operator branding and serial numbers, conducting technical testing and matching each SIM with its correct packaging and activation information.

Its recharge-card operations produced physical prepaid airtime vouchers. The facility securely processed serialized PIN data, printed operator artwork and denominations, concealed PINs beneath tamper-resistant scratch panels, incorporated anti-counterfeit features, verified every code and reconciled completed production against the operator’s data.

Its packaging and fulfillment operations designed and printed retail packaging, inserted SIMs and subscriber materials, matched serialized products to the correct customer or channel, managed inventory, picked and packed orders, prepared export documentation and coordinated delivery to operators and distributors throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Workz therefore gave mobile operators a single outsourced partner capable of managing the product from technical design and secure personalization through packaging, warehousing and final delivery. The factory did not fabricate the underlying semiconductor chips or operate cellular networks; it converted chips, software, subscriber data and printed materials into secure, finished telecom products.

By 2017–2018, Workz was producing approximately 60 million SIM cards annually and shipping more than one billion recharge cards. Its broader operations manufactured approximately 1.5 billion telecom products in a single year. The company was recognized as the world’s largest recharge-card manufacturer and one of the leading global SIM-card producers. Dubai factory capabilities and production scale

Transition to eSIM and IoT Technology

As electronic top-ups began replacing physical recharge cards and embedded SIM technology began replacing removable SIMs, Workz again repositioned the business.

The company expanded from physical manufacturing into:

  • SIM operating systems and applications.
  • Over-the-air SIM management.
  • eSIM profile generation and secure data management.
  • Consumer and machine-to-machine remote SIM provisioning.
  • Cloud-based eSIM management.
  • IoT connectivity and device-management services.

Its Dubai operation achieved GSMA security accreditation for secure SIM and eSIM production, data personalization and subscription management. Workz ultimately served more than 150 telecommunications companies across approximately 80 countries. Workz company and certification overview

Sale to Trasna in 2024

On September 3, 2024, Trasna Holdings acquired Workz. The transaction combined Workz’s SIM and eSIM software, secure manufacturing, remote-provisioning and data-management capabilities with Trasna’s semiconductor, system-on-chip and cellular-IoT technologies.

The sale completed Workz’s transformation from a regional handset-distribution and fulfillment business into an international secure-connectivity and eSIM technology company. It also gave Trasna an integrated offering extending from semiconductor and SIM technology through manufacturing, cloud provisioning and IoT device connectivity. Trasna’s acquisition of Workz
